Sciatica Treatment Forest Row
Gentle Manual Therapy, Dry Needling and Rehabilitation for Sciatica Relief
Sciatica can cause significant pain and discomfort, affecting your ability to walk, sit, exercise and carry out everyday activities. At Forest Row Clinic, we provide personalised sciatica treatment using gentle manual therapy, targeted rehabilitation exercises and, where appropriate, dry needling to help manage pain, improve mobility and support recovery.
Our experienced practitioners work with patients from Forest Row, East Grinstead, Hartfield, Ashurst Wood and the surrounding areas, offering a tailored approach to back pain and sciatica.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica describes pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that contribute to it. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the buttocks and down each leg.
Symptoms commonly affect one side of the body and may include:
Sharp, shooting or burning pain travelling from the lower back or buttock into the leg.
Tingling, pins and needles or numbness in the leg or foot.
Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting, bending or certain movements.
Weakness or discomfort when walking or standing.
Persistent aching in the buttock, thigh or calf.
Sciatica is commonly associated with a bulging or herniated lumbar disc, although age-related changes in the spine and narrowing around the spinal nerves can also contribute.
How We Treat Sciatica at Forest Row Clinic
Our approach focuses on understanding the underlying cause of your symptoms and developing an individual treatment plan to help restore comfortable movement and function.
Gentle Manual Therapy
We use gentle, targeted hands-on techniques to help improve spinal and pelvic mobility, reduce associated muscle tension and make everyday movements more comfortable.
Treatment may include soft tissue techniques, gentle spinal mobilisation and carefully selected manual therapy approaches suited to your symptoms and level of discomfort.
We understand that sciatica can be extremely painful, particularly during the early stages. Our practitioners adapt treatment to your individual needs, avoiding unnecessarily forceful techniques or movements that aggravate your symptoms.
Dry Needling for Sciatica-Related Muscle Pain
Dry needling involves inserting fine, sterile needles into selected muscles to help manage muscular pain and tension.
Sciatica can sometimes be accompanied by tightness and discomfort in the lower back, gluteal muscles and surrounding tissues. Where clinically appropriate, dry needling may be used as an additional treatment to address associated muscular pain.
Dry needling does not directly remove pressure from a compressed spinal nerve, and evidence for its effectiveness in treating sciatica itself is limited. We therefore consider it selectively, rather than as a routine treatment for sciatica.
Sciatica Rehabilitation and Exercise
Targeted rehabilitation is an important part of recovering from sciatica and reducing the impact of recurring symptoms.
At Forest Row Clinic, we develop personalised exercise programmes designed to improve movement, build strength and gradually restore confidence in everyday activities.
Your rehabilitation may include:
Gentle mobility exercises for the lower back and hips.
Progressive strengthening of the core and gluteal muscles.
Carefully selected nerve mobility exercises when appropriate.
Advice on sitting, lifting and daily activities.
Gradual return to walking, running, gym training and sport.
Our aim is not simply to provide temporary symptom relief, but to help you develop the strength, mobility and confidence to return to the activities you enjoy.
Do I Need an MRI Scan for Sciatica?
Not everyone with sciatica requires an MRI scan. In many cases, a thorough clinical assessment can identify the likely source of symptoms and guide appropriate treatment.
If your symptoms are persistent, worsening or accompanied by significant neurological changes, we can advise whether further medical assessment or imaging may be appropriate.
New bladder or bowel dysfunction, numbness around the saddle area, or severe or progressive leg weakness requires urgent medical assessment.
How Long Does Sciatica Take to Improve?
Recovery varies depending on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms. Many people experience substantial improvement within several weeks, although some cases take longer.
Staying appropriately active, following a progressive rehabilitation programme and avoiding prolonged bed rest can support recovery.
